Many Kenyan and East African students embarking on their academic journeys in the UK often encounter unforeseen challenges. Beyond the excitement of a new country, they frequently grapple with profound homesickness, a lack of immediate local guidance, and the absence of the parental-type support crucial during emergencies. Navigating unfamiliar systems – from the National Health Service (NHS) and banking to complex academic procedures – can be daunting. While UK universities provide essential student support, these services are often structured and impersonal, failing to meet the deep-seated need for a warm, familiar, and culturally aligned ‘second family’ that many international students crave.
This understanding forms the bedrock of Sahara Eclipse. We recognized a critical void: the need for a compassionate, proactive support system that resonates with the cultural expectations of East African parenting, offering a personal touch when it matters most.
